Nigel Patrick Jenney (Venning 1953–58)
The club is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Nigel Jenney, M.A., F.R.G.S., F.Inst.Pet.
Born in 1940, Nigel joined Venning House in 1953 and quickly distinguished himself as a student. He rose through the ranks to become House Prefect in 1955, School Prefect in 1957, and ultimately Head of School in 1958. His time at school was marked by exceptional achievements across academics, leadership, and sports.
Nigel’s academic accolades included winning the Middle Classics Prize (1955) and Byrde Memorial Classics Prize (1958). He also shared the Blackburne-Kane Cup in 1958. In addition to his academic prowess, Nigel served as Vice President of the Debating Society, Hon. Secretary of the XX Club, and Captain of the Chess Club.
Nigel’s sporting accomplishments were equally remarkable:
- Cricket: Awarded 2nd XI Colours (1956), 1st XI Colours (1957–58), and served as Hon. Secretary in 1958.
- Rugby: Winner of the Pitt Cup (1956), 2nd XV Colours (1956), and 1st XV Colours (1957).
- Hockey: Achieved 2nd XI Colours (1957), 1st XI Colours (1958), and won the Prentice Cup (1958), earning the prestigious Triple Colour distinction.
- Tennis: Awarded 1st VI Colours (1956–58), Singles Cup champion (1956–58), and winner of the Heard Trophy (1956).
- Shooting: Earned Miniature Range Colours (1956–58) and won the Brock Cup (1957).
In the Combined Cadet Force (C.C.F.), Nigel held the rank of CUO, earned his Certificate "A" in 1955, and attended camps at Topsham (1955), Bourley (1956), and Dorchester (1957).
Nigel’s extraordinary achievements highlight his talent, dedication, and versatility across numerous disciplines. His contributions to school life were profound, and his memory will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
