Dr Piers Gardiner B.SC.,Ph.D.,F.G.S (Venning 1953 - 58)
The Club were very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Piers Gardiner.
Pierce was a first cousin of the 3 Jenneys all of whom were in Venning House in the 1950s.
Piers passed sufficiently well at A level to gain a place at London University where he achieved BSc, reading geography, in 1962. Suitably encouraged by this success he moved to Ireland and took a DPhyl in Geology which he completed in 1968. He remained in Dublin for the rest of his life becoming a highly regarded geologist internationally. He married in 1968 and is survived by his wife, daughter and 3 sons.
During his working life, he could be found lecturing, surveying and writing on aspects geological.
He was active in many organisations including:
The Geological Society, London (he was a Fellow)
International Association of Sedimentologists
Irish Mining & Quarrying Society
National Committee for Geology (Chair 1984/88)
Royal Netherlands Mining Society
Institute of Geologists of Ireland (founding member 1999)
He also supported his cousin Nigel Jenney during the 1990s in some of his enterprises in England and played golf together at Princes Club.
It is ironic to note that Piers and Nigel died on the same day, Christmas Day 2024.
Thank you to Andrew Moore (Venning 1953 - 58) for writing this obituary.
