Allhallows Memorial - All Saints' Day, 1st November 2020

The Last Post

Played by Patrick McCaig

We think, as we celebrate All Saints tide and approach Remembrance Day, of all those whose names are inscribed on our School’s War Memorial Boards. Those boards that we looked at, and perhaps ignored, as we yawned our way through yet another chapel service.  But as we grow older we begin to understand more about sacrifice and duty.

In September 1914 Laurence Binyon wrote his poem ‘For the Fallen’ with words so familiar that perhaps we have stopped listening to them ‘Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn’ In that line the poem reminds us of two things. First that war is, and always has been predominantly the business of youngsters:  Young boys and men and women who in the main have not formed great political affiliations, they are just fighting for their country: tragically they die before they have a chance to live and love. Secondly, those who have died have left us the awesome task of creating the sort of world that will give meaning and purpose to their deaths. This is our duty and maybe our sacrifice.

Faced with the relentless misery of world news, we could become cynical. But, hopefully helped by our time at Allhallows, we may have learned that great tenet of Christianity that Faith, Hope and Love are the weapons with which we can fight for a new order, or as religious people might put it, for the Kingdom of God.

Remembering is also a powerful weapon in this fight for a better world. In remembering we do not glorify war, nor commemorate only those of our own nation. In remembering we should recognise our common humanity. An imprisoned German spy greeted the officer who came to lead him to the firing squad. ‘I don’t suppose you would shake the hand of an enemy spy?’ he asked. ‘No! But I will shake the hand of a very brave man and fellow officer,’’ came the reply. With such grace the world suddenly becomes a better place.

We commemorate the courage and devotion to duty of our lost fellow Old Honitonians today, those who in war and in peace gave their lives or made any sacrifice in order to make the world a better place: We dedicate ourselves to follow their example of devotion to our duty, whatever the cost, in order to make this world a place worthy of their sacrifice.
