John Sinclare Banks (Headmaster's House 1948, Middlemist 1949 - 54)
The OH Club are very saddened to hear recently of the passing of John Sinclair Banks, who passed away at his home in Violes, Provence, on 5th June 2025, aged 89.
John joined the Allhallows in September 1948, originally in the Headmaster’s House before moving to Middlemist in May 1949. A committed and capable student, he rose to become a Head Commoner in 1953 and a House Prefect later that year. He was academically strong, gaining "O" Levels in July 1953 and December 1954 and receiving the Shell Form "B" Prize in 1950. A member of the XX Club, he took particular interest in the sciences, which paved the way for his future studies and professional life.
Outside the classroom, John was a valued member of the school’s Rugby 2nd XV and took an active role in the Combined Cadet Force, achieving the rank of Company Sergeant Major and earning Certificate "A" in 1952. He attended annual camps at Warminster and Bourley.
After leaving the School in December 1954, John pursued his studies at the Portsmouth School of Pharmacy and later joined the family business in West London. He served with distinction on the Middlesex Health Committee as a pharmaceutical advisor, a role he held for many years until his retirement after a 40-year career.
John had a lifelong passion for sports cars and the wines of the Rhône Valley, interests that eventually drew him to retire in Provence in 1994. There, he immersed himself in village life, tending his vines and olive trees, and embracing the culture of the region he loved.
John is survived by his wife, Hilary, and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, both at school and throughout his long and active life.
