Francis Ernest Martin (Shallow 1945–1948)

FRANCIS ERNEST MARTIN (Shallow House 1945– 48)

5th December 1931 – August 2025

We are saddened to report the passing of Francis Ernest Martin, an Old Honitonian of Shallow House, who joined Allhallows in September 1945.

During his time at the school, Francis distinguished himself as Head Commoner in May 1948 and earned his School Certificate in July that same year. A keen member of the J.T.C., he attained Certificate “A” in March 1948 and attended camp at Warminster. He was confirmed in the School Chapel on 23rd June 1947 and left the school in July 1948.

After leaving Allhallows, Francis returned to the family farm in Plymtree before moving in 1952 to another farm just outside Honiton, where he would spend the remainder of his life immersed in the agricultural world he loved. In 1960, he married Mary, and the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary earlier this year. They had one son, Paul.

Francis remained deeply committed to the local farming community. He was an active and long-standing member of the Honiton Agricultural Society, even serving a term as President. His passion for rural life extended beyond farming — he was the secretary of a local rifle shooting club for more than 25 years and also enjoyed playing skittles with a local team.

While he was firmly rooted in Devon, Francis also enjoyed travel, venturing to Australia and Canada, and taking part in several cruises around Europe with Mary.

He was immensely proud of his connection to Allhallows and remained a loyal Old Honitonian throughout his life, attending reunions and annual gatherings whenever he could.

He will be fondly remembered by those who knew him for his steadfastness, community spirit, and enduring love of the land.
