OHGS – West Country Golf Week 2017

OHGS – West Country Golf Week 2017

John Pagliero’s efforts in organising the week were well rewarded and he reports:

"The WC week went very well again this year although sadly, we were just a little short of numbers. On each day we were threatened by the rains - and most days they arrived, but, thankfully, not for too long...

On Monday 26 June, we all arrived at Oake Manor GC, near Taunton for our annual match against the Old Tauntonians. This was a new venue for both teams and turned out to be a popular one. Our team - John Bridger, David Danskin, John Harper, Peter Heron, Jon Husain, Roddy Long, Paul Zealey and JP drew the match 2-2.

On Tuesday 27 June, fourteen of us turned out at Lyme Regis for the OHGS championships - the eight of us above being joined by Jonathan Christie, Peter Green. Richard Heard, Jeremy Page, Charles (aka Tim) Pipkin and David Reynolds. The competition was won by the 'bandit of Huntercombe', Peter Green, who came in with a very creditable 37 points - bad back indeed?... He was 1 point ahead of Richard Heard and several ahead of the rest of us in the field.
Peter also won the 'Nearest the Pin' with David Reynolds claiming the 'Longest Drive'. Generally it is Richard Heard who claims the 'Longest Drive' - he never actually wins it but he regularly claims it...! You see it is stipulated that the 'Longest Drive' must come to rest on the fairway and on the correct fairway at that...!
Perhaps, when all is said and done, Jon Husain should have won the longest drive - he came all the way down from Deal in Kent...!!

Our now regular dinner at 'The Harbour Inn' in Lyme, on the Tuesday and following the championships, was, once again, most enjoyable and all the golfers were happily joined by Sheila Long (Madame President...?) and Giles & Gru Blomfield. We got 'rained on' then as well...!!

On Wednesday 28 June, we played at Exeter Golf & Country Club in our annual match against the Devon Dumplings - all cricketers once were we... This resulted in a victory by 3 matches to 1 with our team comprising John Bridger, David Danskin, Peter Green, John Harper, Jon Husain, Jeremy Page, Charles (aka Tim) Pipkin and JP.
The Devonshire beef and the treacle sponge went down very well, most said afterwards... I am, therefore, able to proclaim that the OHGS remains unbeaten for 2016 & 2017.

The week ended on Thursday 29 June with a somewhat 'exhausted' excursion around the Dorset Golf & Country Club, a most attractive and testing venue that we may well visit again in the future. I think though, for most, the week's adrenaline had subsided for not a lot was discussed about scores during the post round sandwich lunch. Then it was off home for another year"
