OH XI v DEVON DUMPLINGS
On Friday 14th August 2009 an OH XI was assembled to play the Devon Dumplings at Bradninch Cricket Club in memory of Don Palmer who was a stalwart of both the OH club and the Devon Dumplings. The OH XI was captained by Seb Warner who won the toss and put the Devon Dumplings in to bat on an overcast and damp morning. Richard Heard and Will Murray opened the bowling and caused the Devon Dumplings no end of problems with their very consistent swing bowling, Heard snapped up both openers which included James Sienesi (OH 94-99, who was captaining the Devon Dumplings) in his first three overs before being cruelly taken out of the attack by a torn hamstring!
The OH's continued to restrict the Devon Dumplings with some excellent seam bowling from Murray and Phil Tuck who was now starting to role back the years, with some dangerous in swing and passionate attitude. Murray made another breakthrough with a very athletic caught and bowled to put the Devon Dumplings deep in trouble at 28-3, however May and Tidball started to re build and by lunch the Devon Dumplings had steadied the ship and were now in a good position to launch an attack in order to post a challenging score.
following a delicious lunch arranged by Bradninch CC, Will Murray and Tim Dutton opened proceedings and and were immediatley able to eliminated any Devon Dumpling counter attack with some incredibly accurate bowling which frustrated both May and Tidball into false shots off Dutton. Dutton then followed this up by taking a tremendous one handed diving catch at slip to give Murray another wicket.
The Devon Dumplings then collapsed to be all out for 165 with Murray taking 4-35, Heard 2-6, Dutton 2-29 and Tuck 1-46, which was a fantastic effort and provided a score that was very achievable despite being two men down with Heard's injury and Zealey's early departure back to London.
Phil Holland and Tim Dutton opened the batting for the OH's and from ball one scored freely with Holland smashing the Devon Dumplings all round the ground with some lusty cuts and drives, Dutton played a more controlled innings with some delicate late cuts and clips off his legs before being caught for 43. Holland continued his offensive with fours and sixes to all parts until he was run out for a sparkling 65. David Chapman 26 not out and Will Murray 31 not out then closed out the match handing the OH's an excellent win by 8 wickets.
A big thank you must go to Bradninch Cricket Club for letting us use their ground and the Devon Dumplings for slotting us back into their fixture list after so many years away. All the players, supporters including many of Don's contemporaries had a wonderful day and hopefully this now can become an annual fixture.
